OFFICE HOURS:
7:15 AM – 4:00 PM
Monday – Friday

Maintenance Staff, from left to right: Maintenance Foreman Elisha Davis, Nick Miller, Dustin Treftz, Kevin Schmid and John Scherpenberg, Maintenance Superintendent.

The duties of the Maintena nce Departm ent include the maintenance of all parks and other Village-owned properties, minor road repairs, street sweeping, snow removal and collection of brush and leaves. The Maintenance Department has five full-time staff and during the fall season, hires part-time staff to assist with various needs and leaf collection.

LEAF COLLECTION
The leaf vacuum collection begins in mid-October. Rake leaves to the front of your lawn near the curb (BUT NOT INTO THE STREET) and the Village leaf vacuum will collect the loose leaves. Leaf season ends the third week of December. Prior to mid-October and/or after the third week of December, leaves must be bagged for pick up. Do not dump leaves in the swimming pool area. If you do not wish to wait for the leaf vacuum, bag the leaves in clear plastic bags or brown paper yard waste bags (available at most hardware stores and Kroger) and place them near at curb. They will be picked up by contracted hauler on the same day your trash is collected.

BRUSH COLLECTION
The Village Maintenance Department has a weekly scheduled brush route to collect branches, limbs and brush that can be run through the chipper and turned into mulch. Brush pickup will occur on the same day you’re your scheduled trash pickup. Branches, trimmings, and brush should be stacked in manageable bundles not to exceed 8 ft. in length or 50 lbs (do not place in boxes or cans) and set at the curb, or adjacent to the street where there is no curb (NOT IN THE STREET) after 6:00 p.m. the day prior to scheduled day; however, items should be placed no later than 7:15 a.m. the scheduled day to guarantee pick up. Residents are cautioned about leaving the brush at the curb for several days or over the weekend.

STREET SWEEPING
Street sweeping of Mariemont streets and lanes is scheduled regularly. Residents, where on-street parking is permitted, are given 24 hours notice to move their vehicles. If vehicles are not moved, they will be towed at the owner's expense and citations will be issued by the Police Department. This is done is accordance with Village Ordinance 76.07 - Continuous Parking In Same Location. Anyone going on vacation may want to make arrangements to have their vehicles removed from the street or lane.

REMOVAL OF ICE AND SNOW FROM SIDEWALKS
While winter can be beautiful, it also poses problems in the area of traffic safety for motorists and pedestrians. Village Maintenance crews work to make the streets safe for vehicular traffic. Consequently, property owners and occupants are charged by law with the responsibility of keeping the sidewalks that border their property free of ice and snow in the interest of pedestrian safety. The Village Ordinance states that within the first 8 hours after daylight, or within 8 hours of the ceasing to fall of any snow, the owner or occupant or other person having the care of any building, premises or unimproved land abutting any sidewalk where there is a graded sidewalk, or a sidewalk graded and paved shall cause the snow or ice to be removed from the traveled part of such sidewalk. Snow or ice shall not be moved into the street gutter when the gutter has been previously cleaned, and in no event shall snow or ice from any area other than the pedestrian walk be moved into the street gutter. Whenever a sidewalk, or any part thereof along any building, premises or unimproved lot of land shall be encumbered with ice or snow, the owner, occupant, or other person having the care of such premises or lot shall cause the sidewalk to be made safe and convenient by removing the ice from there or by covering the same with sand or other suitable substance. Failure to comply with this section for a period of more than 8 hours during the daytime shall subject the owner, occupant, or person in charge to the penalty provided. A fine of not more than fifty dollars each day shall be considered a separate violation.
While this legislation may appear to be rigid it is absolutely necessary for the safe conduct of all persons. All persons should be concerned with the liability of others.

WHOSE TREE IS IT* The Village of Mariemont has been a member of Tree City USA for 11 years and the Maintenance Department, which is responsible for the planting and care of trees in the public areas, has received two “Growth Awards” . The Village has a right-of-way on every street. If you are not sure if a tree belongs to you or the Village, please call the Maintenance Department BEFORE doing any cutting of trimming.

MINIMUM HEAT REQUIREMENTS
It shall be the duty of every person who shall have contracted or undertaken to furnish heat for any building or portion thereof, occupied as a home or place of residence of one or more persons, to heat or to furnish heat for every occupied room in such building, or portion thereof, so that a minimum temperature of seventy (70) degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Centigrade) may be maintained therein between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. and a minimum temperature of sixty-four (64) degrees Fahrenheit (18 degrees Centigrade) between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. of each day whenever the outer or street temperature shall fall below fifty-five (55) degrees Fahrenheit (13 degrees Centigrade).

TRASH COLLECTION
The Village has a contract with an established waste collection contractor for pick up of garbage and waste. An annual fee is required from all householders in addition to sticker labels. One label must be applied to the lid of the garbage can for it to be emptied. Costs are as follows:
a. Householder occupying a house or townhouse ~ $55.00 Annual Fee
b. Householder occupying an apartment in an apartment building which has multiple dwelling units that are serviced at a common collection point for garbage and refuse. ~ $30.00 Annual Fee
c. Sticker labels cost $1.00 each and one label is required for each 32- gallon can or any trash bags (except for yard waste bags).

An annual trash fee must be paid for at the Tax Department and sticker labels may be purchased at the Villager, Krogers, MariElders or in the Village Office at the Village Municipal Building. Retail and industrial businesses are subject to the same fees except for those who contract for collection from a dumpster.

Waste/garbage pick up is scheduled for one time each week per household BUT cans will be emptied only if a label is attached. Therefore, it is owner’s or tenant's option whether their trash will be picked up each week.

Trash will be picked up from your cans at the rear of the building. DO NOT place cans at curb.
Waste/garbage/recyclables shall be handled as follows:

1. WHAT GOES IN OR NEXT TO THE BLUE RECYCLING BIN* (Blue recycling bins and papers should be placed by garbage cans - No sticker label is required)
Newspapers
Mixed papers such as junk mail, catalogs, magazines, collapsed food boxes and small corrugated boxes.
Plastic milk containers, soft drink, detergent bottles marked with a 1 or 2 on the bottom.
Aluminum and metal cans, glass containers.
NOTE: Pizza boxes are NOT recyclable

2 .WHAT GOES IN THE CLEAR PLASTIC BAGS OR YARD WASTE PAPER BAGS* (Bags should be set at curb - No sticker label is required.)
- Grass clippings, pliable trimmings, yard cleanup waste which are too small to be bundled or stacked.
HINT: Have you tried using a mulching blade on your mower, or just leaving your grass clippings on the lawn* This saves time on the task, eliminates bagging and naturally fertilizes lawns. More frequent lawn mowing is another alternative.

3. WHAT GOES INTO THE GARBAGE CAN*
Everything else . . garbage, non-recyclable trash, food scraps, refuse, junk.
Until Hamilton County develops a toxic waste site, this is where to put oil containers, antifreeze bottles, or other bottles for toxic liquids. Let cans of paint dry out so the contents become solid before placing them in garbage. DO NOT PLACE ANY OF THESE CONTAINERS IN RECYCLING BINS.

4. FYI...
Each 32-gallon container requires a $1.00 sticker on the lid of can for the garbage to be picked up.
Large items that can't be broken down or crushed to include in your stickered 32-gallon can or bag should be set at the curb, or adjacent to the street where there is no curb (NOT IN THE STREET), for pick up by contracted hauler.

This is NOT a service of the Maintenance Department.
This service is only for large, bulky items which can't fit into standard containers for regular trash pick up. Please do not abuse this pick up by including service trash which should be put in your trash can for regular pick up by our contracted hauler. Appliance suppliers and contractors must remove their own waste.

In order to have appliances containing fluorocarbon refrigerants, such as refrigerators, ice makers, window air conditioners, and freezers collected by the Village’s contracted hauler, the homeowner must have the fluorocarbon refrigerants removed by a certified technician.

Some of the technicians in our area include:
Act Now Recycling at 681-1900
A Budget Appliance at 231-8887
Eastgate Appliance Service at 528-2266

You may also call the Hamilton County Household Hazardous Waste Hotline at 946-7700.
Old tires and batteries should not be put out for disposal. You may call the Village Office at 271-3246 for a list of places where these items may be dropped off. Most places charge a nominal fee for accepting these items.
Trash, recycling, large items, yard waste and brush are collected according to the following schedule:

Should you have any problems with trash or recycling pickups, please call the Village office at 271-3246 and ask for Sue at Extension #20.
