STAN BAHLER LEAVING VILLAGE OFFICE AFTER 22 YEARS OF SERVICE

It all started in 1974. That’s when Stan Bahler accepted the position of Clerk of the Village of Mariemont for the first time. Now, 34 years later, Stan is stepping down from office for the final time. His service to the Village has been invaluable. Not only has he been the Clerk, but he also stepped in as Treasurer during Patty Schuster’s illness. Stan has witnessed a great many changes during his tenure. He knows so much about the history of Council and the legislation it has enacted over the past 30+ years, he is like a walking reference library. With his quiet demeanor and cool head, Stan has often been the voice of reason during Council debates. Above all, Stan has been a good friend to all who have worked with him. It’s reassuring to know that Stan will be just a few doors down the street in case we need him, although he has done a great job of preparing Paul Tontillo to take his place. There will be an OPEN HOUSE to honor Stan on April 22nd from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Parish Center. Come enjoy some light refreshments and join us as we wish Stan all the best on his retirement.

MARIEMONT OPEN HOUSE

The Village of Mariemont has about 67 houses for sale at this time. To bring these beautiful homes to the attention of buyers, a group of realtors representing homes for sale in the Village will hold a “Move to Mariemont” Open House Tour on Sunday, April 27th from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.  If you have been considering relocating within the Village or have friends or family who are looking for a home in the area, this is a great way to see all the fabulous houses currently on the market in Mariemont. Houses on the tour will be marked with blue and yellow balloons and the realtors will have maps to all the homes. You can also stop by the Square for refreshments which will be served throughout the afternoon.

CINCY MAGAZINE RATES MARIEMONT

One reason so many people might want to attend the Realtors Open House is that, in the April 2008 issue of Cincy Magazine, the Village of Mariemont was rated as one of the tri-state’s best suburbs. Ratings were based on the median home sale prices, safety, and the quality of education. Mariemont Schools ranked fourth in the magazine’s study. The Village ranked second in Hamilton County for safety and received an overall rating of third place. We now hold title to one of the best suburbs in Cincinnati, one of the best hometowns in Ohio and the designation as a National Historic Landmark. Mary Emery’s vision for the perfectly planned community has been realized.

GARAGE SALE SCHEDULED

We have had several calls asking if we would be having a garage sale this year. Last year’s sale was a big hit! Because last year’s sale was such a success, we have scheduled the second Annual Village-Wide Garage Sale for Saturday, May 3rd. It will run from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.  Residents are welcome to put Garage Sale signs in their yards. The Village will put signs in the islands on Wooster Pike and will place an ad in the Enquirer, announcing the sale. All you need to do is set your things out and wait for the customers to arrive!

PLANT SALE and POOL SIGN-UPS ON MAY 10th AT THE STRANDThe Mariemont Garden Club’s Annual Plant Sale will be held on May 10th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the patio at the Strand. Come choose from a nice selection of ‘pass along plants’ from Garden Club members’ own gardens, plus a selection of beautiful baskets, annuals and bedding plants. Also featured will be a variety of outdoor garden creations for sale, as well as gift certificates to the Olde Garden Shack in Terrace Park . . . great Mother’s Day presents! This fundraiser helps the Garden Club to maintain many of the Village’s community flower beds and to make contributions such as the one made in 2007 when the Garden Club was able to contribute $1000 toward the purchase of Beech trees for the Beech Grove on Wooster Pike. For more details, contact Mary Alice Maze at 271-6216.

Swim Pool Sign-Ups will also be held on May 10th at the Strand from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. Additional sign-ups will be at the Dale Park Junior High School on Chestnut Street on Saturday, May 17th from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 and on Thursday, May 22nd from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.

INSTALLMENT PLAN FOR SWIM POOL MEMBERSHIP

Once again, we are offering a budget-billing plan for those families with children who would like to join the pool but are not able to pay the entire membership fee all at once. If you are interested in this plan, please contact the Mayor’s office at 271-3246 to schedule a private appointment with the Mayor to discuss payment options. We don’t want any child to miss out on the opportunity to enjoy this wonderful benefit of being a Mariemont resident.

POLICE APPRECIATION DINNER

On Thursday, May 22nd you will have the chance to show our dedicated Police Department how much you appreciate all they do. That is the date of the annual Police Appreciation Dinner, which will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Elizabethan Room of the Mariemont Inn. The cost is $25 per person. This is also a wonderful opportunity to get to know the members of the Police Department and to be on hand for the announcement of the Officer of the Year. Please call the Village office with questions. Hope to see you there!

COMING SOON . . .

Work will begin soon on the Village Square Fountain Restoration Project. Swisher Landscaping was awarded the contract and should start work almost immediately. The Parks Advisory Board, the Mariemont Garden Club and some very dedicated volunteers have met to plan the Village’s flower beds for this year and planting will begin as soon as weather allows. Around the end of April, the north tennis courts will receive some much-needed professional cleaning and repairs. New electric service will be installed at the swimming pool before the beginning of the swim season. Of course, the 2008 Street Rehabilitation Project will be completed as soon as possible.

TENT CATERPILLARS RETURN

While in your yard, please keep an eye out for tent caterpillars. You will recognize them by the distinctive ‘silk tent’ they construct in the branches of trees, like the one shown at left. If you see any of these fast-spreading pests, you should know that it is important to spray for them early in the year to avoid the infestation we had last year. You can check with your lawn and garden store about spraying the caterpillars yourself, or you can contact the Service Department at 272-5741. They have an insecticide that works very well on the tent caterpillars and will be glad to spray your affected trees for you, although the Village will require you to sign a ‘hold-harmless’ waiver before the Service Department sprays. Please let us know right away if you see any of these caterpillars.

FOR YOUR SAFETY - There are two issues that all residents need to be alerted to.

The first issue is the recent landslides on Miami Bluff Drive. The landslides created some sheer drop-offs and the land there is still unstable. The Village Engineer is investigating these slides and ways that the hillside can be shored up to prevent further erosion. In the meantime, please do not allow children to play in the grassy area on the south side of Miami Bluff and please DO NOT PARK on the south side of the street.

The second issue concerns a recent break-in and burglary in the Village. Fortunately, the thieves who committed this break-in have been caught. Unfortunately, there are always people out there willing to break the law and, although we are one of the safest communities around, we are not immune to these ‘bad guys’. So please lock your doors whenever you go out. If you are planning a vacation, please contact the Police Department at 271-4089 to sign up for their vacation program. While you are away, the police will keep an eye on things and make sure your home is secure during your absence.

To remain one of the safest neighborhoods, we all must be proactive when it comes to safety and crime!

Dan Policastro, Mayor
